3 Ways to Flavor Your Coffee

3 Ways to Flavor Your Coffee

Whiskey Morning Coffee is a small coffee roaster located in Tolar. TX. Back in 2018 me and 3 buddies decided we were going to start roasting and making the most unique coffee flavors around. There was just one rule we made though, we would not be using an artificial ingredients or oils like other coffee companies to give the coffee flavors. We started using bourbon barrels, BBQ smokers, or real ingredients with the coffee.

  1. Bourbon Barrels

The original way we got new flavors into coffee was by aging the coffee beans in our family's bourbon barrels (Sledge Distillery). We would like to say we are the experts in this being one of the early roasters to use bourbon barrels back in 2018. The coffee is aged in bourbon barrels for 3 months before roasting. You will age the green beans of coffee in the bourbon barrels.

If you don't roast your own coffee, It would be easiest to buy it already aged and roasted from us here: Barrel Aged Coffee

     2.  BBQ Smokers

My Favorite coffee we make here at Whiskey Morning is the Texian Army Brew. The Texian Army is a coffee that we smoke 8 hours with pecan and cherry wood.

If you are trying to smoke your own coffee at home, you will want to smoke the roasted beans at the coldest setting you can do. If you have an electric pellet smoker this can be easier than managing the heat on a stick burner.

Here at Whiskey Morning Coffee, we use the pecan and cherry wood because it gives a great light smoke flavor without being too heavy. If you would like a heavier smoke flavor, try using mesquite or hickory wood.

3. Real Spices

Using real spices seems like the easiest way to flavor coffee, but Whiskey Morning Coffee is actually one of the only roasters who actually mixes real spices into the coffee.

Most coffee companies will use flavorings or oils on the coffee beans to flavor it. The downside of the flavorings is that it gives a chemical like taste and a oily film on the coffee.

When using real spices on the coffee, you need to be aware that all spices won't work. The reason some spices might not work could be from a lack of actual flavor, or the coffee can't actually brew. If the spices are to fine, it can clog the filter and make a huge mess in your kitchen.

I recommend trying course ground spices when mixing into your coffee grounds. This will give you a better start on your coffee brewing properly.
